cedar stool　　杉スツール

杉の小さなスツール。

10mmの薄い杉板に切れ目をいれて曲げた小さくて軽い杉のスツールを作りました。
みはたやでは似たようなオーク材のスツールを数年前から作っていて、代表的なモノになっています。
ただ、もともとはこの杉の小さなスツールが原点。
実際にオーク材と一緒に加工も進めていたのですが、オーク材のデザインイメージが盛り上がったこと、杉材の曲げが失敗したこと、等々の理由がありオーク材が先行する事となりました。
ありがたいことに良い反応をいただき、このままこれだけいいのかなと、また挽き曲げ+補強材という加工を使い回すのもどこか気になるところがあり停滞しておりました。
それでも今回作ったのは、頭の片隅になんとなくある「端材活用」「杉活用」というワード。


山の環境問題。
木を扱う仕事をしていてお恥ずかしいところではありますが、私自身はその問題に対して活動的というわけではありません。
それでもどこかのタイミングで気休め程度でもなにか出来たらなとは考えていました。
そんな漠然とした中の一つにこのスツールはありました。
シンプルな構造、簡単な加工であれば、その土地その土地で作ってもらえるのではないかと、みはたやに製作依頼がくることより、その土地の材料をその土地の作り手が作れた方がいいのではないか。


日本各地に存在するこの問題、対策はその土地により様々。
ブランド材として打ち出すところ、加工技術で特徴を出すところ、それぞれの強み考えで行動をされています。
そんな中に著名なデザイナーさんや建築家さんが進められているプロジェクトがあります。プロが考えたデザインをその地域の作り手が作れるシステム。凄く魅力的で憧れる活動に思っています。

今回のこのスツール、強度や使い勝手を考えていたら、少し精度や製作のコツが必要になってしまいました。
設備は一般的なもので、材料調達も難しいものではありません。昔からある挽き曲げという加工方法を少し違う切り口で取り入れたら、またちょっと違うモノになりました。
私はデザインのプロではありませんが、作り手としての考えで、なにかしらのきっかけとなったらいいなと思っています。

基本的に子供用のスツール。
貫の部分の色は家族や先生達と一緒に塗ってもらいたいと思っています。
色だけじゃなく、絵やイラスト、名前でも。世界に一つの「じぶんのいす」に。

Small cedar stool.

We made a small and light cedar stool by cutting and bending a thin 10mm cedar board.
We have been making similar oak stools at Mihataya for several years, and they have become our representative products.
However, this small cedar stool was originally the starting point.
We were actually working on it together with the oak, but the oak was the first to go due to a number of reasons, including the fact that the design image of the oak was more exciting and the bending of the cedar wood had been unsuccessful.
Thankfully, we received a good response, and we wondered if we could just continue with this, but we were also somewhat concerned about the process of using the ground and bent material plus reinforcing material all over again, so we stagnated.
Still, we made this product because we had the words "utilization of scrap wood" and "utilization of cedar" in the corner of our minds.


Environmental issues in the mountains.
I am ashamed to admit that I am not very active in the woodworking business, but I myself am not very active on this issue.
Even so, I had hoped to do something about it at some point, even if it was just to take my mind off of it.
This stool was one of those vague ideas.
I thought that if the stool had a simple structure and could be easily processed, it could be made locally, and that it would be better if local makers could make the stool from local materials, rather than having Mihataya receive requests for production.


This problem exists in all regions of Japan, and measures to deal with it vary from region to region.
Some places are trying to create a brand name for their materials, while others are trying to create a distinctive feature with their processing technology.
There is a project being promoted by a well-known designer and architect. This is a system that allows local makers to create designs conceived by professionals. I think this is a very attractive and admirable activity.

This time, when I was thinking about the strength and usability of this stool, it required some precision and production tricks.
The equipment is common and material procurement is not difficult. I took a slightly different approach to the traditional process of grinding and bending and came up with something a little different.
I am not a professional designer, but as a creator, I hope that my ideas will inspire something.

Basically, this stool is for children.
I would like the stools to be painted in colors with the family and teachers.
Not only colors, but also pictures, illustrations, and names. It will be the one and only "your chair" in the world.
